Types of doctors :
When we are sick, we usually have to see a doctor. Because various parts of our body may be affected, we may need to see different types of doctors.
The common cold is the most common disease I fall ill with. This kind of illness can be taken care of by quite a few types of doctors. We can go to a doctor's clinic or hospital to see a family medicine doctor, a pediatrician, or an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) doctor.
Sometimes I have a stomach upset and feel like vomiting. Mom and Dad will take me to see a gastrointestinal doctor.
When I have a toothache, I will go to the dentist to see if I have any cavities.
My maternal eldest uncle is an ophthalmologist, which means he is an eye doctor. We regularly go to his clinic to have an eyesight examination by him.
My aunt, the wife of my maternal eldest uncle, is a doctor of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Because my Mom has recently experienced a pain in her right arm from the shoulder to the elbow, my aunt has bought a lot of therapeutic patches for Mom to apply on her right arm to alleviate the pain.
My maternal youngest uncle lives in Taipei. He is a psychiatrist. Dad says that people living in metropolitan Taipei have heavy pressure. Many of them need to swallow pills prescribed by psychiatrists to alleviate their pressure.
Dad says that if someone wants to be a medical doctor in Taiwan, he or she needs first to study in medicine for seven years, of which the last two years will be spent as an intern.
After graduating from medical school, his or her next several years will be spent as a resident doctor in a teaching hospital. Only after passing the medical specialist examination will a resident doctor become an attending doctor.
